Phytolacca is an interesting perennial to have in the garden.
It grows as a large shrub, rarely reaching 3m in height, with soft, vegative leaves, small racemes of white flowers in late summer which develop into beautiful deep violet berries in late summer to autumn.
It was previously named as P.decandra and has collected a series of common names like ‘Pigeon berry, Pokeweed and Inkberry.
The main parts used are the berry and the root. Both of which contain saponins and lectins that can be toxic.
Phytolacca has been included on the weed lists of some States.
