This variety of Sugar Cane can very aptly be regarded as ‘heirloom’ as it is the variety that was once the most dominant type on the globe.
For two centuries before the mechanization of the sugar industry, this variety was king.
It proved to be too easily damaged by the new machinery for harvesting and newer, tougher breeds were developed to cope with the rough handling necessary with massive machine harvesters.
This is a beautiful perennial grass that lends itself to modern gardening as a screen, backdrop or just a sweet filler.
